As per the Hindu tradition, Lord Brahma created the Universe, and along with it, he also created a female deity called Shatarupa, who could acquire a hundred forms. Shatarupa was very beautiful. Brahma got infatuated with her and continued to stare at her wherever she went. This behaviour does not befit a God, who ought to be full of divine qualities and not be attached to his creation, as per Lord Brahma facts.

However, in whichever direction she went, he turned his attention there. In fact, he added one head in every direction to look at Shatarupa; thus, he came to have four heads.

This frustrated her all the more, and Shatarupa jumped high in the sky. But Brahma sprouted one more head at the top to continue looking at her; thus, he got the fifth head. Brahma felt a deep connection with Shatarupa and became possessive about her. This lower and indecent behaviour on the part of Lord Brahma angered Lord Shiva. Brahma was attached to temporary things external beauty and ignored the permanent reality, the soul.

The sanctum sanctorum of this Brahma temple has the idol of four-headed Brahma along with his consort Gayatri. Hundreds of thousands of devotees visit the Brahma temple at Pushkar in the Hindu month of Kartik November and take a dip in the sacred lake.

However, Lord Brahma is never worshiped. All the living beings on Earth are believed to have been originated from Brahma. He is the God of Wisdom and the creator of the Holy Vedas. He took the form of a gigantic lingam that extended from the heaven to the underworld. The Lingam declared that if any of them could detect the beginning or end of the lingam, He would be recognized as the greater of the two.

Both Brahma and Vishnu agreed to this and set out in opposite directions of the lingam to detect its beginning or end. As Brahma was searching the end of the lingam, he passed the Ketaki flower at the uppermost part of the lingam. Brahma requested the Ketaki flower to declare before Shiva that he had reached the uppermost end of the lingam. The Ketaki flower testified before Shiva that Brahma had reached the uppermost end of the lingam.

He cursed Brahma that any human being would not worship him. Shiva also cursed the Ketaki flower that it would not be used in any ritual or puja ceremony. According to one of the legends, Lord Brahma created Goddess Saraswati. However, he became overpowered by her eternal beauty. Finally, Saraswati became so angry with Brahma that she cursed him that anyone on Earth would not worship him.

It was determined that whoever first found the end of the pillar would be the more powerful God of the two. Vishnu transformed into a boar and hunted through the depths of the underworld, while Brahma turned into a swan and searched through the skies. After thousands of years of futile quest, Vishnu returned to accept defeat. Angered by the treachery of Brahma , Shiva denounced Brahma never to be worshipped. To aid his task of creation, Brahma created a woman.

She was named the Shatarupa. She was so beautiful that Brahma became infatuated with her, and looked at her everywhere she went. This caused her serious humiliation, and Shatarupa tried to turn herself away.

Brahma sprouted his head until he formed four of them. Brahma , in his obsession, sprouted a fifth head at the top of it all, when she tried leaping up in the sky to escape his gaze. Leaving aside these mythological points of view, there is a psychological explanation why Brahma is not worshipped. Another explanation is that Lord Brahma is depleted energy, Vishnu is active energy, and Shiva is passive energy. The role of Lord Brahma is finished, he creation has passed now. For each direction she went, Brahma developed a head, until he had four, each for the direction of the compass.

Shatarupa had no other option but to leap over Brahma. Even then, Brahma developed another head on top of others. He had a total of five heads now. Right then, Shiva appeared and cut the top head. It was deemed unholy by Shiva. Ever since Brahma has been reciting the Vedas so that he can be freed from his sins.

There is another version of the story that talks about different kinds of animals that were born. When Brahma grew his fifth head, Shatarupa then turned into a cow to avoid his lust.
