But to make a bad film that gulls the voters into thinking it's great is no mean feat either. It may not be noble, but you have to admire the chutzpah. The presence of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close on this year's Oscar shortlist stirs golden memories of the interlopers of old.

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw daubed it with a one-star review , dubbing it "extremely contrived and incredibly preposterous".

Danny Leigh, co-host of the BBC's Film , described the tale as a middlebrow cousin to The Human Centipede 2, while Peter Howell of the Toronto Star dismissed it as cynical Oscar bait where "the bait is poisoned by opportunism and feigned sensitivity".

Try as I might, I can find no one pundits or punters who genuinely believes that Extremely Loud should win the top award. Still there it is, somehow slipping under the velvet rope to gatecrash Sunday's party. Is Extremely Loud the worst film to be nominated for the best picture Oscar? For two hours, the tears are non-stop. Since when did crying become the norm for a film, and laughing, or not crying, become something frowned upon?

But Daldry's adaptation is no walk in the park either. It's an emotional rollercoaster that is perhaps best enjoyed if one could enjoy sad films alone, not in a theater full of people crying at the same time about the images before them. A better movie. And yes, an Oscar-worthy movie. The emotions felt by the various characters would ring as true. And how did those children deal with the loss?
